Mojdeh and Reza's story as new foster carers

Becoming a foster carer for the first time is exciting but you might feel unsure about what to expect. Mojdeh and Reza share their experience becoming new foster carers and the advice they have for people from different cultures who are considering becoming foster carers. This story is also translated into Persian.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves...

My name is Mojdeh, and my husband’s name is Reza. We have been together for just over 22 years. We are both Iranian and came to Australia from Iran 15 years ago. We have two boys who we adopted a couple of years ago, but we also decided we wanted to become foster carers as well.

We have just become accredited foster carers with Settlement Services International through their multicultural foster care program after being approved at the end of August 2021.

What did you decide to become foster carers?

Fostering was something we had always wanted to do. I remember reading a book, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, as a young girl about a woman who fostered 12 children! We have a good life and we are settled down, so we decided to start thinking about fostering.

I have worked in family violence services for the last 10 years and knew about children who needed to enter foster care, short term or long term. I knew if the foster carers understood the background, culture or language that it made a huge difference in making that child feel safe and comfortable.

What are you most excited about as new foster carers?

Everything! We are both excited and a little bit nervous for our first foster care placement. We want to make sure we are a good foster family and that we can make them feel safe and secure. But we feel confident that we have the skills now that we are accredited foster carers.

It was important for us to help our own children be ready for the change. We want our kids to know that families are different and that sometimes kids need to stay with other families. I want them to know they need to look after others around them.

What did your foster carer training teach you?

The training we received from Settlement Services International was brilliant. We had done some training previously for our adoption process in Iran, so it was a great refresher and helped us reflect on being culturally understanding. We learned what to do when children might be ‘misbehaving’ or experiencing distress, particularly as a result of trauma or attachment disorders.

If people can better understand trauma we can all provide better care for children. It is not difficult to help these kids or learn about trauma, we just need to try. We shouldn’t be scared about giving fostering a go or helping.

What do you think more people should know about foster care?

People from any cultural background can become foster carers. When I talk to my friends about fostering, many of them think because they are not citizens, that they are renting, or because they were not born in Australia that they can’t be foster carers. I think a lot of people still don’t understand what foster care is or the support services that are available for children, young people and families.

We want people to know that just because they didn’t grow up in Australia, it doesn’t mean they won’t be good foster carers in this country. Children from all cultures come into foster care, and they need carers who can understand their culture and can create a safe space for them.
